What is Pilates?

Pilates is a system of exercise developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. Joseph Pilates was a keen gymnast, body builder and yoga student who developed his system of exercise and innovative fitness equipment utilising these different exercise philosophies. Pilates is a powerful workout designed to condition and sculpt your entire body. Pilates has become one of the fastest growing methods of exercise in the world today and is enjoyed by celebrities, athletes, rehab patients, fitness enthusiasts and the general population, young and old.

What is the difference between 'Fusion' and 'Contemporary' Pilates?

Contemporary Pilates is a modernisation of the original Pilates method. Modern medical research has given us new insights to the human body. Using this knowledge, the original system has been adapted making it one of the safest, most effective and versatile exercise systems around. STOTT PILATES is a leading example of contemporary Pilates.

Fusion Pilates blends familiar fitness and weight training methods with the Pilates system of exercise. One of the most popular forms of fusion Pilates is the Bootcamp Pilates offered at Pilates Nation, which incorporates plyomterics, cardio and weight training principles into the Pilates exercises. Fusion Pilates is often high impact and fast paced in comparison to contemporary Pilates.

What is STOTT PILATES®?

STOTT PILATES is a contemporary approach to the original exercise method pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates. Co-founders Moira and Lindsay G. Merrithew, along with a team of physical therapists, sports medicine and fitness professionals, have spent over two decades refining the STOTT PILATES method of exercise and equipment. This resulted in the inclusion of modern principles of exercise science and spinal rehabilitation, making it one of the safest and effective methods available.

What are the benefits of Pilates?

Builds a lean, muscular physique
Develops abdominal definition and tone
Assists in safe and steady weight loss
Improves flexibility
Improves balance and co-ordination
Prevents injury and improves athletic performance
Reduces stress and back pain
Improves posture, alignment and body awareness

Will I lose weight by doing Pilates?

Although losing weight may seem difficult, the formula for losing weight is simple: burn more calories than you consume. One of the safest ways to lose weight is to combine cardiovascular exercise with strength training exercise such as the classes available at Pilates Nation. If this is further combined with a clean diet and the appropriate amount of sleep, the weight loss effects are hugely magnified. Our Bootcamp Pilates will burn between 500 and 700 calories and our Contemporary Pilates will burn between 300 and 500 (figures vary depending on intensity and level).

Is Pilates like Yoga?

Yes and No. While Pilates has some similarities, it has some quite marked differences. Like Yoga, Pilates is considered a mind-body exercise method that emphasizes deep breathing, precision and control. Unlike Yoga, Pilates incorporates exercise on resistance equipment and uses many props and accessories to vary and adapt the exercises. Yoga can be considered as quite spiritual and often includes meditation and chanting which you would not find in a Pilates session.

Why is Pilates so popular with celebrities?

Strutting their stuff on the red carpet, celebrities want to look fabulous. With their appearance in the spotlight and under constant scrutiny, they are sure not to waste their time on something that doesn't work. They swear by Pilates as it helps them achieve a leaner, tighter and taller physique. Not only does it help them chisel their abs but it allows them to feel invigorated and de-stressed.

Can I do Pilates if I have back pain?

Pilates is used and recommended worldwide by physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors and doctors to improve back pain. There is strong medical evidence showing that Pilates is beneficial for back pain however, you should always consult your physician before starting any exercise routine. If your main goal is to reduce back pain then STOTT PILATES is recommended over Fusion Pilates because it is more gentle, controlled and low impact. Our experienced instructors will ensure you are given a programme that is safe, effective and modified to suit your individual needs.

Should I do Pilates instead of my regular workout?

Pilates is an excellent addition to any fitness programme especially weight training, athletic training and cardio. While Pilates Nation offers a complete package of fitness, including both cardio and weight training elements, we appreciate the benefits of other systems of exercise. For this reason, we would never advocate giving up the gym or any other exercise programme unless you were unhappy with the results. Pilates Nation can be your new fitness centre or a great complement to your existing programme.

Can I do Pilates if I'm pregnant?

Pilates is suitable both during and immediately after pregnancy, however, specialist antenatal classes (coming soon) and private sessions are recommended. Certain exercises should be avoided during pregnancy and for up to 3 months after giving birth, therefore our general classes are not always suitable. Please speak directly with one of instructors for more information.

How often do I need to come?

The number of times you should attend will largely depend on your fitness goals and current exercise routine. Some of our clients come once a week others can't get enough and come every day. Please speak to one of our instructors to discuss your individual needs.

I have never done Pilates, can I do a Bootcamp Pilates class?

Sure! Bootcamp Pilates is for everyone. Despite the intensity of Bootcamp Pilates, this class has been specially designed to suit everybody, from beginners to advanced. Prior to the class, your instructor will help you become familiar with the equipment and take you through a few basic principles to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable workout (don't forget to arrive at least 15 minutes early!) There is a maximum of 10 people per class so you will be sure to receive lots of individual attention.

How is Pilates Nation different from a gym?

The aim of attending a gym or Pilates centre is to help you achieve your fitness goals which may include weight loss, muscle building, toning and improved health and fitness. The similarities though end there. Pilates Nation utilises the amazing system of Pilates into all its workouts and sessions. Furthermore, at Pilates Nation, sessions are always in small groups or private one to ones which means you get undivided individual attention helping you achieve your goals. At Pilates Nation, we take the time to get to know you and your needs so you are never just a number. Our packages are also more flexible with no joining fees or contracts to sign.

I like to work out with a friend. Can I bring them along?

Sure. Feel free to book yourselves in for a fun class, or if you prefer personal training, you can take a duo session. Your personal trainer will devise a dynamic varied workout based on both your needs so you can train together but still achieve your individual goals.

What should I wear? Do I need to bring anything with me?

We advise you to wear comfortable sporty clothes so you can move freely. With Pilates, it's important to be aware of your body alignment and posture so we don't advise anything too baggy. Regarding footwear, you can choose to be barefoot or wear grip socks which are warm, comfy and keep you from slipping! We sell these in-house for 10 euros a pair.  Running shoes are required for the first half of the Treadlates class.  With our Fusion Pilates classes, you will get hot and sweaty so we recommend having water and a towel. Bottled water is sold in-house for 1 euro. You will need a padlock for the lockers, but these are also sold in-house for your convenience.

What do I need to know before attending my first class/session?

It's important to arrive 15 minutes earlier than your session or class is due to start. This will give you time to complete our Health Screening Questionnaire, become familiar with the centre and meet the team. We like to become acquainted with your face and hope it will be one we will be seeing all the time!
